Sourcing ingredients locally is crucial for our environment. It reduces impact through lowering food miles, delivering fresher produce, supporting the local economy of farmers and much more. Which is why we source fresh, local and seasonal ingredients for our menus, wherever possible.
Let's talk about it in a bit more detail...
Environmental 🪴
Local food travels shorter distances, which significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It not only cuts down on transportation but also on refrigeration and packaging waste.
Quality and Nutrition ✅
Local produce is usually harvested closer to consumption, ensuring its peak freshness and higher nutrient levels. It often tastes better, too, because it is picked when it's naturally ripe rather than artificially.
Health 👨⚕️
Speaking of artificial, local food also often involves fewer preservatives, as it doesn't need to go through long transportation times. You can therefore trace them, allowing us to have better knowledge of farming practices.
Economic benefit 💰
Buying locally helps to keep money going within the local economy, which then helps small-scale farmers and producers to survive and thrive!
Sustainability ♻️
Buying locally also encourages people to eat food seasonally. You'll have probably heard your mum say, "We can't buy those, they aren't in season", and it's true. Some fruit and veg are best in certain seasons, so buying them in those times of the year reduces reliance on long-distance importing and helps preserve farmland in the local area.
